Operations. Combat in European Theater of Operations, 30 Jul 1943-3 May 1945. Participated in operations, exercises, and tests of the Tactical Air Command, 1964-1966, including temporary duty with Pacific Air Forces, Dec 1964-Mar 1965, and Dec 1965-Feb 1966. Combat operations in Southeast Asia, Feb 1966 until close of hostilities. Destroyed 38 MIGs. Two 555 men became aces: Capt Richard S. Ritchie and Capt Charles B. DeBellevue. Transferred without personnel and equipment to Luke AFB, AZ in 1974; redesignated a tactical fighter squadron; manned and equipped for new mission of providing tactical fighter training for US and allied military personnel. Trained US military and selected allied military F-15 pilots, Jul 1974-Mar 1994. Some personnel deployed to Persian Gulf in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Nov 1990-Mar 1991. Since, 1994, conducted air operations as required in support of US and NATO taskings, including Operations DENY FLIGHT, DELIBERATE FORCE, ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM.
